Website Name and Address
Choosing a Website Name
If you already have a business name, this may be the best name for
your site. It will be the name which displayed as your site logo, and
which will turn up in search engines.
But sometimes it may be useful to re-think the name to fit in with
the website side of your business. For instance, the trading name
of my flats in Edinburgh is ‘Wm Caola Properties’. When creating
a website for them I mentioned this name on the site, but I chose
‘Studentflat.com’ for the website name.
There are many things to consider when choosing a website address (also known as a 'domain name' or 'URL address'). First of all you have to check that your preferred name has not already been taken by someone else. The easiest way to do this is to look on www.easily.co.uk.
Sometimes it is preferable to choose a website name that is easy to remember and impresses your customers, rather than one which reflects the original name of your business. Consider, for instance, the following website addresses which I have found for websites - www.studentflat.com, www.HRBristol.co.uk, www.willcreate.co.uk. I can also find one for yours.
Prices for website addresses depend on the suffix (eg .com addresses are more expensive than .co.uk names) and also on the length of time you reserve this name for your business. Prices start from £10 for a .co.uk or .org.uk address. You also have the option of purchasing as many website addresses as you want, all of which will link directly to your site.
Once you own a website address you also have email addresses related to it. For example, because I own the address willcreate.co.uk I can have any email addresses that ends @willcreate.co.uk... for instance I have chosen will@willcreate.co.uk. Emails to this address are forwarded to my normal e-mail account.
